N@C Mobilizes Public and Political Support for Nutrition in Zambia

Global Day of Action

During the first week of May, Nutrition at the Center (N@C) staff in Zambia commemorated the Global Day of Action on Nutrition in Lundazi and Chadiza districts, Zambia.  N@C partnered with the Civil Society Organisations Scaling up Nutrition Alliance, the Ministries of Community Development and Mother and Child Health, and District Nutrition Coordinating Committees to mobilize political and public support for nutrition and promote coordination of nutrition programs in the districts.  The event provided an opportunity for different key players in nutrition programs in the districts to mobilize political and public support for nutrition in the districts.

The event was held in two health centers where Nutrition at the Center is working.  The event Global Day of Action 3was spearheaded by the District Nutrition coordinating Committees–a nutrition governing structure that coordinates nutrition programs at the district level.

The committees organized community outreach programs to sensitize communities on the importance of nutrition and the roles women and men can play in the nutrition outcomes of children under 5 years old.  The event included drama, songs and sports to raise awareness on nutrition challenges in the two districts.  The committee also organized radio programs on nutrition related topics.

The event was attended by traditional and government leaders.  The Chadiza District Administrative Officer Global Day of Action 2spoke at the event and shared that the government is committed to improving child nutrition status especially during the first 1000 days. He emphasized the importance of multi-sectoral and integrated approaches in improving maternal and child nutrition in the district. He further said that the establishment of the District Nutrition Committees is necessary for improving coordination of nutrition activities in the district.
